Sofia region is notable for its rich diversity of natural sights, cultural landmarks and opportunities for recreation and tourism.
  Vitosha mountain - the most visited Bulgarian mountain, proudly rises over the capital Sofia. It offers marvelous tourist centres - Aleko and Zlatnite mostove, excellent tracks for winter sports and service equipment, as well as beautiful natural sights, such as Boyana waterfall, the so called 'stone rivers', and the cave of Duhlata - the longest cave in Bulgaria. The bio diversity of the region has been preserved in Vitosha Natural Park, where numerous picturesque tracks lure you to follow them, so that they can reveal to your eyes the virgin beauty of nature.
  The other mountains in the region are Verila (to south), Plana (to east), and Lozenska mountain (to northeast). Although they are not such visited as Vitosha mountain, they offer marvelous landscapes and opportunities for hiking.
   Preferable places for recreation and relaxation close to nature are the dams of Pancharevo and Iskar.
   The Sofia region is rich in cultural and historical sights. The numerous museums, churches and architectural monuments in the capital Sofia, as well as the considerable number of monasteries in the whole country: Dragalevski, Vakarel, Pancharevo, Kladniski and Vladaiski monasteries, give people the opportunity to get acquainted with the rich and interesting history of Bulgaria. There is situated the unique Boyana church included in the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage.
   Sofia region is endowed with lots of curative mineral springs. One of the most famous Bulgarian spa resort for curing heart diseases - Bankya is situated there.
