Shumen

Shumen region is distinguished for its rich cultural and historical heritage. It offers marvelous opportunities for development of cultural tourism.


The biggest town in the region is Shumen. It's a town with rich history where one can visit interesting cultural and architectural sights, beautiful house-museums of eminent Bulgarian enlighteners, art galleries, theaters and etc. Not far away from the town are situated the magnificent monument 'Founders of the Bulgarian state' and the Shumen fortress.


A sight of great interest in the region is the ancient town of Veliki Preslav - the second capital of Bulgarian Kingdom, located close to the nowadays town of the same name. It is worth visiting the historical museum of 'Veliki Preslav' where the Preslav golden treasure is exposed.


In Shumen region is situated the famous Madara horseman - unique rock relief under the auspices of UNESCO.


Another interesting town in the are is Targovishte - an important craft and educational settlement in the past and an administrative center nowadays. There are more than 30 buildings of interesting architecture in the old Renaissance quarter called 'Varosha'.


8 km. from the town of Targovishte there is a curative mineral spring - a premise for development of spa tourism.


The bio diversity of the region has been preserved in the reserve of Patleina. There is situated Patleina monastery - a center of production of the famous Preslav ceramics.


The dams of Ticha and Yastrebino offer excellent conditions for fishing.
